Islamabad, September 25, 2020 (PPI-OT): Tahir Abbasi Senior Vice President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s, Ajmal Baloch All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajran and Traders Action Committee Islamabad, Khalid Chaudhry former Senior Vice President ICCI and Mehboob Ahmed Khan current Executive Member ICCI held a meeting with MCI Director Revenue Amir Shehzad and stressed upon him to ensure the implementation of Islamabad High Court stay order against the hike in property tax in Islamabad.
Tahir Abbasi said that ICCI had obtained a stay order from the Islamabad High Court against the exorbitant hike in property tax by the MCI. But despite that stay, the Directorate of Revenue has issued property bills with new rates that included the previous outstanding bills with interest. He said this move of MCI has created a lot of concerns in the business community. He said that doing so despite the stay order of IHC was prima facie a violation of the court order. Therefore, he urged that MCI should ensure the implementation of court’s stay orders regarding the property tax.
Ajmal Baloch, President, All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tijaran said that the Islamabad High Court had issued a stay order against the hike in the property tax and the case had been linked to the Supreme Court’s decision at the last hearing while the stay order has not been cleared. Therefore, he emphasized that amendment bills of property tax on old rates should be issued in compliance with the order of the High Court.
Khalid Chaudhry former Senior Vice President, ICCI and Mehboob Ahmed Khan, current Executive Member ICCI said that unjustified harassment of the business community about property tax should be stopped and court orders should be respected. MCI Director Revenue Amir Shehzad said that the last date for payment of property tax was being extended till October 31, 2020. He said that a copy of the court decision was awaited and amendment bills of property tax will be issued in light of the court’s decision. He added that a summary in this regard has been sent to the Mayor Islamabad.
