Karachi, June 25, 2018 (PPI-OT): Provincial caretaker minister for Health, education and Population Welfare Sindh, Dr Saadia Rizvi has said that the rate of breastfeeding is around only 37 % in across the Sindh and this is one of the main reasons of diarrhoea and other childhood disease causing death of thousands of children. This she said while addressing the breast feeding promoters initiative program organized by Nutrition’s support program and others at DOW University Karachi.
Dr Saadia Rizvi stressed health care providers to give adequate time to counsel and convince the mother for giving breastfeeding to beings from the very start. She also asked the paediatricians and Government departments to work in Coordination and She offered full support of Government of Sindh for this very important task.
On this occasion Dr. Zahoor Baloch program manager Nutrition support program Sindh briefed about the program. Pakistan Pediatric Association, Society of obstetrician, UNICEF and Nutrition Support program are collaborating. In first phase 12 districts of Sindh will be covered which are Khairpur, Ghotki, Umerkot, Noshehroferoze, Sanghar and six districts of Karachi. All the health staff linked with delivery and care of child will be trained and subsequently they will counsel and help the mother for breastfeeding,
Prof Jamal Raza President Pakistan Pediatric Association Sindh presented the action points for improving the breastfeeding situation in Sindh. Prof Jamal asked the help of media and suggested to improvement current act and law of infant feeding. He also recommended updating this act according to WHO code of 2016 asking to ban the advertisement of all under 3 years milk formulas.
Prof Sadia Paul Vice President Society of Obstetricians explained the role to be played by health workers so as to start breastfeeding just after Dr. Mazhar of UNICEF offered all support and expedites for this and other programs for improving of child health states of Sindh. Prof. Kertar Principal Dow Medical Collage mentions the leading role of Dow University in vending community Health programs. He also offered full support from Dow university in future programs as well.
