In a landmark development for the nation’s military command structure, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has been appointed as Pakistan’s first-ever Chief of Defence Forces, a move Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed on Friday as a “historic moment” for the country’s security institutions.
In an official statement shared on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister commended Field Marshal Munir for his “bold and courageous leadership.” He credited the new CDF with unifying the Armed Forces and galvanizing the nation during what he termed the “Battle for Truth.”
Sharif asserted that the people of Pakistan would remember Munir’s crucial role in guiding the forces to a “decisive victory” and ensuring the homeland’s security during a critical period. The government formally issued notifications announcing the Field Marshal’s elevation while he concurrently serves as Chief of Army Staff.
The Prime Minister also extended felicitations to Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, whose tenure as Chief of Air Staff has been prolonged for two additional years.
The premier lauded the Air Chief’s exemplary command, noting that under his stewardship, the Pakistan Air Force ‘destroyed seven enemy aircraft and sophisticated missile defence systems’ with exceptional professionalism, reinforcing the country’s aerial superiority.
Reaffirming a message of national unity, Prime Minister Sharif stated that all state institutions stand together for Pakistan’s defence, development, and prosperity. He added that with collective resolve, the country would continue to fortify its defence to make it ‘truly invincible.’
