PM’s Climate Aide Advocates Global SDG Cooperation with South Sudan Delegation

ISLAMABAD: The Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, briefed a parliamentary delegation from South Sudan on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during their visit to the SDGs Secretariat. The meeting underscored the necessity for international collaboration to address global challenges such as climate change and sustainable development.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the delegation, led by Deputy Speaker Nathaniel Oyet Pierino, engaged with Ms. Alam in discussions focused on the SDGs. Established by the United Nations in 2015, these 17 global objectives aim to foster a sustainable and equitable world by the year 2030. They address critical areas like poverty, education, gender equality, and climate action.

Ms. Alam emphasized the shared vulnerabilities of Pakistan and South Sudan to climate change, including water scarcity and extreme weather events. She called for joint efforts to enhance climate adaptation strategies, highlighting the importance of resilience within vulnerable communities.

The Prime Minister’s aide also stressed the need for increased global efforts to combat climate change, aligning with the Paris Agreement’s targets. She noted that many developing nations, despite a global commitment, still face challenges such as inadequate financial resources and technological support, which are crucial for effective climate action.

Deputy Speaker Pierino expressed South Sudan’s dedication to the SDGs and its eagerness to learn from other nations’ experiences, particularly in climate action and sustainable infrastructure. The meeting highlighted the significance of South-South cooperation and the sharing of best practices, with Ms. Alam reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to supporting its African partners in navigating climate and development challenges.
