KARACHI: Managing Director, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), Zubair Channa, on Thursday said SSWMB will start lifting the garbage in Karachi’s Central and Korangi districts in coming months.
This he said while chairing a meeting of opening of technical tenders of Korangi and Central districts. Five international companies participated in technical tender opening out of which three were from China and two from European companies. The tenders will be given to companies in a month after completion of evolution process.
Channa announced that SSWMB will start lifting of garbage across Karachi city in upcoming months in order to provide relief to masses. The SSWMB was lifting and dumping the garbage of East, South and Malir districts while district municipal corporations were managing solid waste responsibilities in Korangi and Central districts.
He said SSWMB had offered Korangi and Central districts’ chairmen to take up solid waste responsibly but this could not be made possible yet due to the few reasons. The SSWMB management, World Bank and higher authorities concerned have decided to depute a technical advisor to open technical tender for garbage lifting.
MD SSWMB said initially, tenders were supposed to open on 16 May 2021 but as per SPPRA rule, they should be published in national and international newspapers first, thus, technical tenders were opened on 20 May 2021 where five international companies participated. He hoped that overall situation of lifting and dumping of garbage throughout the Karachi would be improved as per international standard.
