Tributes Paid to Gaw Kadal Massacre Victims on 35th Anniversary

Srinagar: Hurriyat leaders and human rights organizations paid tributes to the victims of the Gaw Kadal massacre on their 35th martyrdom anniversary in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Indian troops killed more than 50 people in the Gaw Kadal area of Srinagar on this day in 1990 by opening fire on demonstrators protesting the molestation of several women the previous night.

All Parties Hurriyat Conference Spokesman Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas, in a statement issued in Srinagar, described the events at Gaw Kadal and similar incidents as a stain on Indian democracy. He stressed the commitment to continue the mission of the martyrs, emphasizing the need to keep this mission in focus.

Senior APHC leader Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi paid tributes to the martyrs, stating that the massacre was a deliberate state action. He noted that the event, where innocent individuals were killed on the streets, remains unforgettable.

Other Hurriyat leaders and organizations, including Ghulam Muhammad Khan Sopori, Syed Bashir Andrabi, Khawaja Firdous, Zamrooda Habib, Junaid al-Islam, Ghulam Nabi War, Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party, and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, expressed disappointment over what they see as indifference from the international community and human rights organizations toward such massacres.

The leaders highlighted that the powers given to Indian troops under certain laws have led to the deaths of over one lakh Kashmiri civilians through various means, including massacres and fake encounters. They lamented the lack of accountability for the perpetrators of these acts.

The leaders reiterated that the use of force cannot deter the Kashmiri people from their struggle for self-determination.

Meanwhile, people visited the martyrs’ graveyard in Srinagar to offer Fateha for the massacre victims. Pasban-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir also paid tributes in a statement from Muzaffarabad.
