KARACHI: The crackdown against profiteers in Ramazan continued as Rs 444,000 was imposed on 361 shopkeepers for overcharging besides 32 were jailed on Sunday.
As per statement issued here, teams led by deputy commissioners of all districts have been conducted raids across the city on daily basis and taking the profiteers to task. The stats said that 361 vendors who were selling essential commodities at higher than administration-fixed prices have been fined with Rs 444,000 whereas 32 were sent to jail as they kept challenging the government’s writ.
Commissioner Karachi Ejaz Ahmed Khan had directed his subordinates to continue operation against the profiteers and ensure that commodities are sold at government’s prices. He directed that vendors should be bound to display government’s price list and take action against the violators if they don’t display it in a manner that it can be seen easily. The commissioner asked the citizens to purchase items after seeing the price list and approach the administration on help line 1299 in case of any complaint.
The commissioner said that the profiteers would not be allowed to loot the people, adding that the operation against them (profiteers) will continue till they start selling at government-fixed prices. Ejaz said that they would follow all directives of the chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to eliminate overcharging and ensure that essential commodities are sold on government’s rate.
