KARACHI:‘We are not prepared for the consequences of climate change, so we must mobilise our communities for an effective response’, said Ms Shahnaz Hamid, Chairman Pakistan Red Crescent Sindh while speaking at the launching ceremony of a joint project of German Red Cross (GRC) and Pakistan Red Crescent titled ‘Integrated Community Resilience’, held at PRC provincial headquarters in Karachi.
The goal of the project is to increase the resilience of the community and mobilise and sensitize them for an effective response during disasters. Moreover, it intends to prepare the population for climate change adaptation.
Briefing about the project, Ghulam Rasool Faruqi of GRC said that the three-year project was based on three components which include improving community resilience, improving access to safe drinking water along with hygiene and sanitation practices as well as improving the food consumption through kitchen gardening and climate smart practices.
The project will target 700 households in Karachi and 980 in Badin. It will be the first time where integrated vulnerability capacity assessment will be done in an urban setting in Pakistan.
A two-day workshop was conducted in this regard where participants of the project were provided training on different subjects to mobilize the communities.
PRC Provincial Secretary thanked GRC for its cooperation and emphasized upon the need of urban response mechanism in recent times. The project will be implemented in eight communities of Badin and two of Karachi.
