Aga Khan University (AKU) held the closing ceremony for the 2024 Presidential Challenge for Environmental Solutions, with participation from students in Pakistan, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
This challenge encourages students to play an active role in combating environmental changes, particularly in addressing water issues.
The Presidential Challenge was launched in 2022 with the aim of involving students in solving environmental problems. This year’s theme, “Every Drop Counts,” inspires students to find practical solutions to water scarcity and abundance issues.
The winning team from Tanzania presented the DropWise Smart Irrigation System, a solar-powered automated irrigation system designed to effectively address water shortages in agriculture. This system can save over 40% of irrigation water.
Kenya’s team introduced the PureFlow system, an automated water purification and monitoring system that reduces water pollution without the need for expensive infrastructure.
Teams from Pakistan and Kenya jointly secured the second runner-up position. Pakistan’s team developed a water absorbent mat and filtration system, while Kenya’s team presented the Smart Aqua system, an AI-based solar-powered irrigation system.
High school students from Karachi also participated in a separate competition, where 24 schools showcased innovative ideas.
Maryam Kogiele, Director of the Environmental Office at Aga Khan University, stated that the university is taking bold steps to tackle climate change, including reducing emissions and collaborating with partners.
Over the past three years, the Presidential Challenge has inspired hundreds of students on AKU campuses to think boldly and act decisively. These students are proving that every drop and every idea matters.
