Japanese Emergency Relief Goods Handed Over to Pakistan

Islamabad, September 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):On September 3, the Government of Japan emergency relief goods, tents, and plastic sheets were handed over to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) by Mr. KINOSHITA Yasumitsu, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Pakistan Office, in the presence of Mr. ODAGIRI Toshio, Consul-General of Japan in Karachi, at the Jinnah International Airport Karachi.

On August 29, the Government of Japan has decided to provide these goods through JICA, based on a request from the Government of Pakistan to the Government of Japan. The first batch of the goods which was handed over earlier on August 31 were distributed in Balochistan Province.

Mr. ODAGIRI stated that Japan is deeply saddened by the widespread damage in Pakistan caused by the unprecedented flooding, which has surpassed even the devastating floods of 2010 and hope that these goods will be of some help to the victims. In addition, he mentioned that there is a high demand for food, water, and medicine in the affected areas, and the United Nations has issued an appeal for assistances. Therefore, the Government of Japan will continue to work closely with the Government of Pakistan, and the Embassy of Japan, the Consulate-General of Japan, and JICA will cooperate with each other to respond to the situation.

Mr. KINOSHITA expressed his sincere condolences to the grieving families who have lost precious lives and their loved ones. He said “Japan has also experienced various disasters in the past. Entire JICA family is with you in this most difficult time. JICA has decades old partnership with the government of Pakistan in disaster management. With the partnership of JICA, the Government of Pakistan prepared its first ever disaster management plan in year 2012, which currently is in the process of revision for next 10 years. JICA is committed to support relief, recovery, and rehabilitation effort of the Government of Pakistan with the motto of ‘Build Back Better’.” He also mentioned his heartfelt respect to the dedication and contribution of NDMA to overcome this catastrophe.

Mr. Muhammad Muazzam Zaman, Representative of NDMA explained the situation in various areas affected by the disaster and the ongoing relief efforts by the Pakistani government, and stated that they are grateful for Japan’s assistance and will make sure that the supplies will be delivered to the victims.

Pakistan urges UNFPA to ensure maternal health, reproductive services for flood-displaced women 

Islamabad, September 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):At the United Nations, Pakistan has urged the United Nations Population Fund to scale up its emergency response for flood-devastated Pakistan to provide life-saving reproductive health services and commodities, especially to some 650,000 pregnant women among the 33 million displaced people.

Addressing a session of United Nations Development Programme, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram said that out of the displaced people, an estimated 8.2 million are women of reproductive age, and up to 73,000 women, who are expected to deliver next month, will need skilled birth attendants, new-born care, and support.

Pakistan Navy deploys Hovercrafts and Helicopters in flood affected areas to expedite evacuation process 

Karachi, September 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan Navy relief and rescue operations are continued in different flood affected areas of Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, Sanghar, Qambar Shahdadkot Sajawal, Rajanpur, Paharpur and Dera Ismail Khan.

Pakistan Navy has deployed two hovercrafts to evacuate stranded people in flood water at Dadu District. These hovercrafts have evacuated hundreds of trapped people from Goth Ahmed Khan Chandio in Khairpur Nathan Shah to high point safe areas. These hovercrafts are capable to be operated on water, land and muddy areas. PN utilizes them for defence of Creeks Areas. Currently, stationing of hovercrafts to evacuate standard people will speed up the rescue operation at far flung and remote areas where evacuation through small boats is difficult.

Meanwhile Pakistan Navy personnel are also wholeheartedly undertaking Rescue and relief operations through use of Helicopters at far off ranges. PN relief teams are providing ration bags, drinking water and cooked food to rescued people. Additionally, large number of medical camps have been established to provide free medicines amongst flood victims. Pakistan Navy is resolutely committed to support the countrymen during this natural calamity.

Chinese delegation presents cheque to PM for flood victims

Islamabad, September 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):A delegation of Chinese companies led by China’s Consul General in Pakistan Zhao Shiren called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Lahore on Sunday and presented him a cheque for the relief and rehabilitation of the flood affectees.

Talking to the Chinese delegation, the Prime Minister said the government and people of China never left Pakistan alone in its hour of need. He said that the friendship of the two countries was higher than the Himalayas and deeper than the ocean.

Prime Minister thanks Qatar for relief support for flood affected people in Pakistan 

Islamabad, September 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has thanked Qatar for relief support for the flood affected people in Pakistan. He was telephonically talking to Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani on Sunday.

The Prime Minister mentioned the air bridge established by Qatar for provision of goods and equipment to flood affected people and a field hospital by Qatar in Sindh. He said Pakistan and Qatar enjoy close and cordial relations rooted firmly in shared faith, mutual understanding and commonality of interests.

Recalling his recent visit to Qatar, Shehbaz Sharif expressed the resolve to work relentlessly to implement the decisions taken during the visit. The Amir of Qatar conveyed condolences over the loss of precious lives and property due to floods in Pakistan and assured his country’s support for the flood-affected people of Pakistan.

United States reaffirms its support, solidarity with Pakistan amidst flood devastation

Islamabad, September 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):The United States has reaffirmed its support and solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan amidst the devastation caused by flash floods and rains in the country. The support was extended during meeting of a US delegation with Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani in Islamabad on Sunday. The delegation comprised chairperson of Pakistani caucus in the US Congress Congresswoman Sheila Jackson, Congressmen Al. Green and Thomas Suozzi and US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome.

Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf, Deputy Chairman Senate Mirza Muhammad Afridi, Senator Azam Khan Swati and Senator Dilawar Khan were also present in the meeting. Expressing grief and sorrow over the loss of life and property during recent floods in the country, the delegation vowed to continue support to Pakistan in tackling natural calamities.

The delegation also commended the key role played by Pakistan for establishing peace and stability in the region. On the occasion, the Chairman Senate briefed the delegation about the current situation of floods in the country and expressed gratitude for the United States’ support to Pakistan during this difficult time.

He termed the support of USAID for flood affected people in Pakistan, crucial. Underling the importance of the delegation’s visit in deepening Pak-US ties, Sadiq Sanjrani said Pakistan is desirous of long-term and sustainable relations with the United States. He emphasized the need for strengthening Pak-US trade and economic relations. The Chairman Senate said bilateral cooperation is inevitable to address problems related to health, security, counter-terrorism and climate change.

Balochistan Chief Minister thanks PM for his continuous support to flood-hit areas

Islamabad, September 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):Chief Minister Balochistan Abdul Quddus Bizenjo has thanked Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif for his continuous support to flood-ravaged areas of the province. He stated this while briefing the Prime Minister about the flood relief operations in Bolan on Sunday.

Abdul Quddus Bizenjo said the special interest of the Prime Minister for the restoration of communication facilities is a source of encouragement for us. He hoped NHA will play its role for the full restoration of other affected highways as well.

Apprising the prime minister regarding the restoration of Pinjra Bridge, the Chief Minister said the recent heavy rains and floods caused severe damage to the national highway network in Balochistan and its restoration will help resume the traffic and trade activities in Balochistan.
