Pakistan’s military leadership paid glowing homage to the unparalleled valor and sacrifice of Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, as the nation solemnly observed his 54th martyrdom anniversary on Friday.

According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the country’s top military commanders, including Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces; Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff; and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, commemorated the national hero on behalf of the Armed Forces.

Major Akram, then commanding a company of the 4 Frontier Force Regiment, demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the Hilli sector of former East Pakistan during the 1971 war. He steadfastly defended his position on May 19, 1971, successfully preventing enemy advances.

His bravery was further exemplified on December 3, 1971, when he led a courageous assault on heavily fortified enemy positions. Despite facing overwhelming odds, he destroyed three tanks and continued to fight gallantly until he sustained critical injuries, embracing martyrdom on December 5, 1971.

The ISPR noted that Major Akram’s supreme sacrifice remains an enduring symbol of the unwavering spirit and devotion of Pakistan’s Armed Forces. His legacy continues to inspire generations and reinforces the military’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On this occasion, the Armed Forces reaffirmed their resolve to honor the memory of all martyrs who laid down their lives in the defense of Pakistan. The nation, the statement concluded, will forever remain proud of its brave sons whose sacrifices are permanently etched in its history.
