Pakistan’s Chairman Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, brought critical global issues to the forefront during a meeting with a United Kingdom parliamentary delegation, emphasizing the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis in Palestine.
The high-level discussion took place on the sidelines of the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) being held in the Barbadian capital. Chairman Gilani utilized the platform to reiterate Pakistan’s principled stance on key international matters.
The British delegation was headed by MP Kate Osamor, who serves as the Chair of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). The group also included Lord Syed Salah Kamall, MP David Mundell, and Baroness Lindsay Northover, representing the Conservative, and Liberal Democrat parties respectively.
Accompanying the Chairman Senate were Senator Rubina Khalid, Senator Mohsin Aziz, and Speaker of the Sindh Assembly Awais Qadir Shah, who formed part of the Pakistani contingent.
During the talks, Gilani underscored the long-standing relations between the two nations and called for enhanced inter-parliamentary cooperation. He also raised the need for sustained international engagement on Afghanistan and highlighted the urgency of global collaboration to address climate change.
A formal invitation was extended to the UK Parliament to attend the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, scheduled for November 11-12, 2025, in Islamabad. The event aims to gather parliamentary leaders to deliberate on shared democratic values.
The UK representatives appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role within the CPA and lauded its continued efforts for regional peace and stability. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening parliamentary dialogue and promoting the Commonwealth’s shared principles.
