Karachi, July 18, 2018 (PPI-OT): Caretaker Minister for Labour and Human Resources Simon John Daniel on Wednesday informed that minimum wages for all the categories of workers in all industries in province of Sindh has already been fixed and revised by 15% which will be applicable from July 1st 2018, while fixing of the minimum rates of wages underway in 4 new industries including glass bangle industry, mineral water industry, private schools and colleges and private Hospitals, clinics and maternity homes. This was revealed in a meeting on minimum wages of workers chaired by Caretaker Minister for Labour and Human Resources at his office.
Secretary Sindh Minimum Wages Board Shaheen Nisar Mangi informed that two years back with the assistance of an NGO a survey was conducted at Hyderabad regarding Bangles Industry and a proposal was sent to Labour Department for further measures. Similarly, she added that she had approached Directorate Private Institutions Directorate, however, received no assistance from them. She further informed that we have no proper statistics and data of Bangle Industry, Mineral Water, Private Educational Institutions and Private Health care providers, while employers also reluctant to share any information regarding workers and their wages. She underlined the need to convene meeting of employers, workers and labour department to find solution and implementation of minimum wages Laws in the Province.
On the occasion Caretaker Minister for Labour and Human Resources Simon John Daniel directed to remove all ambiguities in minimum wages laws and define it properly with clarity. He maintained that he received complaints from Labour leaders that minimum wages were not implemented properly. He directed Labour Department to prepare effective mechanism for effective implementation of Laws so as to provide relief to workers. He was of view that home based workers particularly women in bangles and other industries were deprived of their rights and were provided low wages. He sought list of 41 industries in which minimum wages were fixed added to fix minimum wages for home based industry also where women work particularly bangle industry.
