In a crucial meeting today, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, and Ms. Pernille Ironside, UNICEF’s Representative in Pakistan, discussed the severe challenges posed by climate change and population growth on child welfare. The gathering at the Finance Division highlighted the urgent need for collaborative efforts to combat these existential threats.
The Finance Minister lauded UNICEF for its continued technical support and knowledge sharing in Pakistan. He expressed concern over the impact of environmental changes and demographic pressures on child stunting and educational deficiencies. Senator Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of the Country Partnership Framework with the World Bank, which allocates a significant portion of the anticipated USD 2 billion yearly funding towards tackling population-related issues.
Senator Aurangzeb called attention to the vital role of UNICEF and other international partners in supporting Pakistan”s initiatives. He stressed the necessity for enhanced coordination with the Ministry of Climate Change, Ministry of Population Welfare, and Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. The minister underscored the need for precise identification of priority areas, capacity building, and the provision of technical assistance to ensure effective project implementation.
Ms. Ironside reaffirmed UNICEF”s dedication to Pakistan, emphasizing collaborative efforts across various sectors, notably in child care and girls” education. She highlighted UNICEF”s strategic contributions and leadership in aligning with national objectives through a multi-sectoral approach. Projects in education, health, and climate resilience were noted as key focus areas for the organization.
