Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb affirmed the government’s dedication to executing a Prime Minister-approved plan to reshape the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Presiding over a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Rightsizing of the Federal Government in Islamabad on Tuesday, Aurangzeb emphasized the FBR’s crucial role in Pakistan’s financial structure. The meeting, attended by Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari and other senior officials, focused on boosting the tax-to-GDP ratio and modernizing the FBR into a more effective and responsible revenue institution.
The committee reviewed a presentation by the Power Division concerning the Power Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC), highlighting its operations, accomplishments, and future strategies. The presentation stressed improving PPMC”s function as a technical foundation for power sector planning and performance evaluation, focusing on data-driven projections, system optimization, and inter-sector collaboration.
A preliminary report from the Law Division addressed its work scope, performance standards, ongoing streamlining efforts, and their impact on public policy and administration. The report provided a broad overview of the division”s affiliated departments and suggested enhancements for institutional productivity, removing redundancies, and achieving superior results with more efficient structures.
The committee also examined recommendations from the Rightsizing Sub-Committee, chaired by Ambassador-at-Large Salman Ahmad, concerning the Revenue Division”s organizational structure. These suggestions outlined a comprehensive strategy for institutional change aimed at improving efficiency, deploying personnel optimally, and aligning the division with national goals.
The meeting emphasized a results-focused governance structure using better performance management methods and incorporating accountability measures to support effective and adaptable public services. Aurangzeb stressed the need for performance-based human resource strategies throughout the FBR to guarantee every rupee of public spending leads to visible improvements in tax collection, compliance, and service provision.
