Pakistan’s highest military command, including the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, paid solemn tribute today to Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed on the 54th anniversary of his martyrdom, honouring his supreme sacrifice and exceptional courage during the 1971 conflict.
In a statement released by Inter Services Public Relations, the armed forces commemorated the heroic actions of the Nishan-e-Haider recipient, who belonged to the 4 Frontier Force Regiment and fought in the Hilli sector of what was then East Pakistan.
The tribute recounted Major Akram’s unwavering tenacity, first demonstrated on 19 May 1971, when he resolutely defended his position, denying the enemy any tactical advantage. Later, on 3 December 1971, he was tasked with launching an assault on heavily fortified enemy positions.
Displaying unparalleled resolve during the advance, he destroyed three enemy tanks and fought valiantly until sustaining severe injuries. He embraced Shahadat on 5 December 1971, exemplifying the highest ideals of devotion to duty.
Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff; Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff; and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, stated on behalf of the services that the immortal heroism of Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the nation’s defence forces.
The military leadership affirmed that his sacrifice continues to inspire generations and reinforces the enduring commitment of the forces to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the motherland.
On this solemn day, the Armed Forces reaffirmed their resolve to honour the legacy of all martyrs who laid down their lives for Pakistan, adding that the nation remains eternally proud of its courageous sons, whose sacrifices are etched forever in its history.
