Pakistan’s naval strength is set for a substantial enhancement as the fourth Hangor-class submarine, GHAZI, was launched in China, completing the flotilla being built abroad and moving the entire contingent into the final phase of sea trials before delivery.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced in a statement on Wednesday that the vessel was introduced to the water at the Shuangliu Base in Wuhan. This event marks a crucial milestone in the expansion of Pakistan’s underwater combat capabilities.
With the launch of GHAZI, all four submarines constructed in China under a bilateral accord are now undergoing rigorous testing at sea. The vessels are in the final stages of preparation before being officially handed over to the Pakistan Navy.
The comprehensive government-to-government pact entails the acquisition of eight Hangor-class submarines in total. While the initial four have been built in China, the remaining four underwater craft will be constructed domestically at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Ltd (KS and EW). This domestic production is facilitated through a Transfer of Technology (ToT) arrangement.
These state-of-the-art submarines are outfitted with sophisticated weapons systems and advanced sensors. The technology enables the fleet to engage targets from standoff ranges, positioning them to serve a pivotal role in maintaining regional peace and stability.
The launching ceremony was attended by senior officials from both Pakistan and China, underscoring the deepening strategic and defense cooperation between the two allied nations.
