Global Times: China-Pakistan ironclad ties consolidated; key CPEC projects to advance as ‘BRI, Chinese modernization benefit all’

BEIJING, Nov. 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday held talks with visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, and Sharif is one of the world leaders that has visited China right after the conclusion of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

China is ready to work with Pakistan to elevate the level of all-round strategic cooperation, speed up efforts to build a closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era, and inject new impetus into their all-weather strategic cooperative partnership, Xi said.

After presenting the key outcomes of the 20th CPC National Congress, President Xi underscored that China will continue its fundamental policy of opening-up and provide new opportunities to Pakistan and the rest of the world through continuous development. China will further deepen synergy between its development strategies and those of Pakistan.

Xi pointed out that facing a highly uncertain world, both sides should stand on the right side of history, keep up their strong cooperation in multilateral mechanisms, and work closely on major international and regional issues so as to uphold true multilateralism, international fairness and justice and the shared interests of developing countries, and inject certainty and positivity into the world.

According to a joint statement issued after the bilateral meeting, the two sides held in-depth exchange of views on the bilateral relations as well as regional situation and international political landscape. The two sides agreed on the importance of China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership amid the emerging global challenges. The meetings were marked by traditional warmth, mutual strategic trust and commonality of views.

In the meeting, Sharif noted that it is a great honor for him to be among the first foreign leaders to visit China after the successful 20th CPC National Congress, which marked a new milestone. The visit is a testament to the profound, ironclad friendship between Pakistan and China.

Sharif said that over the past decade, under the leadership of President Xi, China has created a miracle of great development achievements. China has upheld multilateralism, promoted global solidarity and cooperation, and made important contributions to safeguarding world peace and development. In doing so, China has lived up to its responsibility as a major country.

Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times “Having invited Sharif as one of the first foreign leaders to visit China after the conclusion of the 20th CPC National Congress, not only demonstrates the ever close relationship between the two sides but once again proves that the international community is optimistic about China’s development in the future, and is willing to strengthen ties with China.”

Pakistan fully supports the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative put forth by President Xi, said Sharif. It will strengthen communication and collaboration with China in international and regional affairs to make a positive contribution to world peace and development. “The Pakistan-China friendship is unbreakable. Pakistan will always stand firmly with China,” said the Pakistani prime minister.

Through the Belt and Road Initiative, China has helped Pakistan in solving two bottleneck problems plaguing Pakistan’s economic development – infrastructure and energy supply shortage, Qian said. Through the first phase of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) cooperation, it has laid a solid foundation and built a platform for Pakistan’s economic development in the next step, he noted.

“The close and effective strategic coordination between China and Pakistan has set an example of international cooperation and has delivered a clear message to the world, that countries with different social systems, nationalities, civilizations and stages of development can still achieve win-win cooperation,” Qian said.

The two sides will fully utilize the Joint Cooperation Committee of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, advance CPEC with greater efficiency, and make it an exemplar of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, Xi said at the meeting.

China will work with Pakistan to expand cooperation in the digital economy, e-commerce, photovoltaic and other new-energy technologies, and take solid steps to advance cooperation concerning agriculture, science, technology and people’s livelihoods, the Chinese president said.

China will continue to do its best to support Pakistan in stabilizing its financial situation. China supports its provinces with a strong industry in pairing up with Pakistani partners to advance industrial cooperation, and hopes the Pakistani side will provide a sound business environment, Xi noted.

Noting completion of a decade of CPEC’s remarkable achievements in 2023, the two sides expressed satisfaction at CPEC’s contribution to socio-economic development of the two countries, according to the joint statement.

The two sides also noted that the recent meeting of CPEC Joint Working Group on International Cooperation and Coordination (ICC) had highlighted that CPEC was an open and inclusive platform. Both sides welcomed interested third parties to benefit from investment opportunities in the priority areas of CPEC cooperation such as industry, agriculture, IT, science and technology, and oil and gas.

Lin Minwang, a professor at the Institute of International Studies of Fudan University, told the Global Times that due to the fact that there is a clear advantage for the development of the CPEC – the high-level mutual trust between China and Pakistan, and such kind of trust toward China from Pakistan is a solid consensus shared by all major political parties and forces.

“With Sharif coming to power earlier this year, the China-Pakistan cooperation on the CPEC has focused more on the massive infrastructure projects, and to improve the livelihoods for the locals with more progress on infrastructure construction,” Lin said.

Sharif said Pakistan is ready to work with China to continue promoting high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and hopes to have China’s strong support in the upgradation of ML-1, the Karachi Circular Railway and other important infrastructure projects. Pakistan will further step up security measures and do all it can to protect the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel.

UNESCO Reaffirms Commitment to “UN Plan of Action on Safety of Journalists”

ISLAMABAD:UNESCO under its Multi-Donor Program on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists marked the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists (IDEI). The event was held in collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union to Pakistan, the Embassy of Sweden, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Some seventy participants from diverse backgrounds joined the event, observing the need to ensure the freedom of expression and safety of journalists.

This year completes the 10 years of the UN Plan of Action on Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity (UNPA). It is the first concerted effort to address attacks and impunity of crimes against journalists globally. Adopting a holistic approach, it brings together UN bodies, national authorities, media, and civil society organizations together to promote a safer environment for media workers. The anniversary is a milestone to reaffirm, recommit and reposition efforts to advance the UN plan.

Pakistan was amongst the five countries in which the UNPA was piloted. Initiatives were also taken at the regional level. During the event held today, experts shed light on the efforts that took place during the decade. The recently enacted ‘Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act 2021’, states to implement best practices provided for in the UNPA.

The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists recognizes the far-reaching consequences of impunity, especially of crimes against journalists in limiting fundamental freedoms, especially the freedom of expression. According to the UNESCO observatory, in Pakistan, 14 journalists lost their lives while doing their professional duties in the past two years. Independent research highlights extremely low levels of convictions against the killings of these journalists. This day asks member states to investigate these cases to reduce the impunity against these crimes.

Speaking at the occasion Her Highness Dr Riina Kionka, Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Pakistan stated, “The protection of journalists is a concern for us all: a free press is a global public good that we should not take for granted. Putting an end to impunity for crimes against journalists is a must if we want to uphold freedom of expression and media freedom”.

Former Senator Farhat Ullah Babar graced the occasion and reiterated that enacted laws need to be implemented to ensure rule of law and governance. Mr. Youssef Felali-Meknasi, Country Representative and Director, UNESCO thanked the participants and stated, “As media freedom mirrors our freedom to express, we need to increase our efforts to protect and safeguard our fundamental freedoms.

Aseefa distributes tablets among trainees

NAUNDERO:Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, the daughter of former President Asif Ali Zardari, chairperson Zabtech, said that I have come here today to repeat a promise, the promise that my martyr mother and grandfather Benazir Bhutto and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and my brother Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had made.

She said that employment is the right of every human being, this training program is the weapon of women’s economic freedom and with this training program stoves (Chulhas) of their houses will burn with it. She expressed these views while addressing the ceremony of completion of artistic training (handloom) to women by SZABIST and Zabtech at Bhutto House here Thursday.

She said that with this training, women will become independent, this art will lead women on the path of development. She further said that the purpose of my mother’s founding of SZABIST was to improve the future of the sons and daughters of the country. I can proudly say that we have taught 60,000 youths and put them on their feet, she declared. She said that God willing, your fate will change now.

Addressing the event, PPP Ladies Wing President and MPA Faryal Talpur said that the Party has always been conscious of women’s rights and is trying to empower women socially, economically and morally in every field.

She said that the youth and women of Sindh are rich in talent and the land of Sindh is providing them with great opportunities. She claimed that the Sindh government is making efforts to provide technical education opportunities for the people in modern times and with the support of organizations like SZABIST Foundation and Zabtech, we are conducting training programs to meet the needs of artisans and we will continue the technical program. She said that the SZABIST Foundation has provided women with art education as well as equipment, with which they can improve their home conditions by increasing their income and play a real role in society.

She said that the entire team of SZABIST Foundation and Zabtech is commendable for conducting such a training program and they hope that this journey of development will always be continued and they will play a role in advancing the mission of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed for the development of women. She confessed that the training conducted by SZABIST and Zabtec was a small effort, adding with this, girls can progress further. She said that if a girl gets education, her family gets education. She said that Bibi Shaheed always struggled for women and brought them forward, First Women Bank is an example of this.

After this, she added, the People’s Party introduced the Benazir Income Support Program in her name. Through this, we have brought women forward and improved their economic conditions, she further claimed. They shouted slogans while holding large banners in favour of their demands. While talking to newsmen, candidates Sadam Junejo, Mansoor Ali Mangi, Asmat Ansari, Farman Katpar, Awais Bhutto, Mansoor Mangi and others alleged that they obtained 50 to 80% marks almost a year ago but they have not yet been given offer letters either in 1st phase or in second phase which is injustice despite repeated assurances and sheer violation of establishing good governance in education sector.

They alleged that the District Education Officer (Primary) who is also holding the dual charge of Deputy Director School Education simultaneously, Gul Sher Soomro, is distributing offer letters on political grounds without taking into consideration merit and they also accused him of hiding proper taluka-wise vacancies (SNE) in the district which is highhandedness on his part.

They further alleged that Soomro is not disclosing 500 vacant seats of Taluka Dokri for which offer letters to us have been denied by him. They said that if they go to his office to obtain offer letters due to their merit then he is calling the police for harassing us. They also accused his front man clerk Gulshan Bugti of cheating, using unfair means and killing merit. They demanded immediate stern legal action and inquiry against the hidden posts and issuance of offer letters purely on merit to end unrest among them.
