Leading biochemistry experts have stated that artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and bioinformatics are no longer concepts of the future but are today’s realities, fundamentally transforming medical research and disease diagnosis. This was the central theme of a gathering of experts held at Dow University of Health Sciences.
Titled “Emerging Trends in Medical Biochemistry,” a one-day pre-conference workshop was organized by the Society of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry (SOMCB) Sindh Chapter. The event was held at the Professional Development Centre of Dow University in connection with SOMCB’s first international conference, “BioCon 2025,” scheduled to take place in Lahore this month.
Approximately 100 professionals, including distinguished faculty, researchers, and postgraduate students from various institutions across Sindh, attended the seminar. Participants included experts from institutions such as Dow University, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry, and Bahria University of Health Sciences, among others.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Dow University and chief guest of the event, Professor Dr. Jahan Ara Hassan, said that such workshops strengthen academic networks and inspire a new generation of researchers to build a bridge between science and patient care. The host, Professor Dr. Zeba Haque, stated in her welcome address that medical biochemistry is the foundation of modern diagnosis and treatment.
During the inaugural session, Professor Dr. Danish Hussain and Dr. Muhammad Bilal Usmani lectured on the role of bioinformatics in tackling genetic diseases. Dr. Nazish Waris from Baqai Medical University explained how artificial intelligence is giving a new direction to medical research, emphasizing that these emerging trends are already transforming treatment methods.
Dr. Sadia Qamar, a post-doctorate fellow from Bahria University, discussed the use of nanotechnology in biochemistry, stating that its application is rapidly increasing in both diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, Dr. Nazakat Hussain Memon from Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University presented an overview of modern laboratory equipment and their practical procedures.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from Professor Dr. Fauzia Imtiaz of Jinnah Sindh Medical University. In her closing remarks, Professor Dr. Zeba Haque emphasized the need for continuous collaboration among institutions to promote innovation in medical biochemistry.
