In an extraordinary development, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) has granted protective bail to the newly-inaugurated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, Sohail Afridi, shielding him from potential arrest until November 18 amidst uncertainty over the specific charges filed against him.
The decision was delivered on Thursday by a two-member bench, comprising Justice Ijaz Anwar and Justice Muhammad Naeem Anwar, which was hearing a petition submitted by the chief minister. The court has restrained all relevant authorities from taking him into custody.
During the proceedings, the judiciary also instructed law enforcement agencies to submit comprehensive details of all First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against Afridi. The legal ambiguity surrounding the cases became apparent during a courtroom exchange.
When Justice Ijaz inquired about the specific FIRs naming the chief minister, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa advocate general candidly remarked, ‘We ourselves do not know; maybe I am also nominated in an FIR,’ a comment that elicited mild laughter in the courtroom.
This legal protection comes just one day after Sohail Afridi was sworn into office by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi. His inauguration was also carried out following directives issued by the Peshawar High Court, underscoring the significant role the judiciary has played in the province’s recent political transitions.
