The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) today announced plans to construct an alternative road to alleviate severe traffic congestion and address persistent safety concerns stemming from the deteriorating Natha Khan Bridge.
This decision aims to provide a long-term solution for motorists plagued by frequent closures and maintenance work on the critical artery. The existing bridge has become a source of significant inconvenience for travelers due to its worsening condition and repeated incidents of iron theft. These issues have necessitated frequent repairs, leading to major disruptions in traffic flow and public frustration.
In response to the growing public grievances, Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, convened a meeting with senior officials, including Municipal Commissioner S. M. Afzal Zaidi. During the session, the Mayor directed the KMC Engineering Department to move beyond temporary fixes and establish a permanent, sustainable alternative.
Mayor Wahab has mandated an expedited timeline for the project, instructing engineering teams to complete a comprehensive survey of the proposed route within one week. Construction is set to commence immediately following the submission and approval of the survey findings. Preliminary work on route planning has already started.
‘It is our utmost responsibility to address public grievances and resolve civic issues without delay,’ stated Mayor Wahab. ‘The residents deserve visible and lasting solutions. The Natha Khan corridor is a crucial link connecting the city to the airport and major motorways – this project must be executed and completed on a fast-track basis.’
The KMC reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the city’s urban infrastructure and ensuring the provision of safe and efficient commuting facilities for the citizens of Karachi.
