Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani issued a powerful statement on Friday, branding poverty not merely as a lack of financial means but as a “denial of fundamental human rights,” calling for a revitalized national and global push to forge a just and equitable society.
In a message commemorating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Chairman Gilani affirmed Pakistan’s steadfast resolve to eliminate destitution in all its forms. He described the annual United Nations observance as a moral reminder of the world’s collective duty to ensure economic and social justice for all.
‘Poverty. is the denial of fundamental human rights, including access to education, healthcare, decent housing, and justice,’ Gilani asserted. He emphasized that Pakistan’s Constitution and national ethos prioritize the welfare of its populace, especially the most marginalized segments.
The Chairman highlighted that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has consistently spearheaded the nation’s poverty alleviation and social protection initiatives. He recalled the legacy of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, whose visionary leadership laid the groundwork for comprehensive pro-poor policies.
These efforts, he noted, culminated in the creation of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). Today, BISP is recognized as one of South Asia’s largest and most effective social safety nets, empowering millions of low-income families, particularly women, through financial aid, education stipends, and livelihood support.
Gilani commended the ongoing expansions and reforms of the programme, which have enhanced its transparency, outreach, and inclusivity, guaranteeing that assistance effectively reaches those most in need.
Reaffirming the role of the legislature in this mission, the Chairman declared the Senate’s commitment to advancing social protection systems and inclusive economic growth. He stressed the importance of legislative measures that prioritize education, healthcare, job creation, and skill development as essential pillars for sustainable poverty reduction.
In his concluding remarks, Gilani urged all stakeholders-including government bodies, the private sector, civil society, and international partners-to unite and reaffirm their dedication to achieving a poverty-free world, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
