LARKANA:As many as 1204 male and female stroke patients were admitted for treatment and further management in four Wards of Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Larkana, during last ten months from January to October, 2019, out of which 611 were males and 593 were females.
According to data obtained by this Scribe on Tuesday from the requisite wards on World Stroke Day, 92 patients expired in Medical Unit-II alone out of which 31 were males and 61 were females during the same period which shows the gravity of this ailment. A Senior Medical Officer Dr. Ashok Kumar said that basically hypertensive patients are mostly suffering from Stroke or those who are eating rich diet and have increased cholesterol level. He said people who go out from air-conditioned rooms in hot day are also at risk of falling prey to Stroke. He said mostly hypertensive patients get Stroke during cold weather because their veins become narrow in winter season otherwise cases have also been reported in summer season.
Dr. Khalilullah Shaikh, retired District Health Officer, said that a stroke is a medical emergency, but prompt intervention can restore blood supply to the brain if stroke patients receive medical care early enough. Intra brain hemorrhage and/or blood clots inside the brain trigger the onset of stroke. He said aim should be to control the factors/causes behind the disease (these include high/uncontrolled blood pressure and diabetes) that is to halt the progress of disease/damage caused by it. He said supportive measures include treatment of underlying cause(s), good nursing care, physiotherapy, etc.
